Good product teams look at customers before they build

Most product ideas do not work, so teams that look at customers before building waste less. Airbnb's founders went and looked at their listings. Microsoft counted how many tested ideas worked; Pendo counted the features people rarely use.

What car owners told each other about insurance

Buying car insurance is easy. Getting the insurer to pay is the hard part.

For 23 years, car owners in Vietnam have swapped advice on public forums. We counted 13.5 million of their posts by topic. The worry that comes up most is not the one the 2026 product brief we tested (next section) set out to fix.

We kept only posts by car owners about insurance: 76,236 of them, with sellers and ads removed.

More than a third of them are about a claim, and about one in seven doubts the insurer will pay at all. Sales calls come up in fewer than one post in a thousand.

Insurance buys you peace of mind. Buying it is easy, claiming is hard, and only the tough and the well informed get paid.

A car owner, 2024-08-28. Paraphrased from Vietnamese.

A brief, tested

On the plan, rare in the posts

A Vietnamese car insurer briefed us on what it believes about car owners. We checked six of those beliefs against the posts: 4 of 6 did not hold.

Six things we remember verbatim from Tasco Insurance's October 2026 briefing on Luma, not all of its beliefs, used as a baseline to check.

Wrong = the posts say the opposite. Says something else = few posts, and they say something else. Barely mentioned = too little talk to judge. Holds = the posts agree. The six, with the posts behind each →

Forum silence is not proof. Car owners who buy inside an app may never post on a forum, and much car talk after 2020 moved to social apps we did not collect. The two larger squares come from AI topic tags; the two smallest from keyword counts.

Will the insurer actually pay?

23 years of the same doubt

Forums grew and shrank, and apps arrived, but the share of car owners asking whether their insurer will actually pay stayed close to 15 percent.

The mood is lopsided once a claim starts. Of 27,111 posts written while making a claim, 38 percent read as negative and 6 percent as positive. We found 116 posts that weigh price against trust. In 94 of them, a pricier insurer that pays is worth it. Only 22 say they are all alike, so buy the cheapest, and most of those mean they are all equally bad at paying.

Many drivers learn the rules of their policy only when the repair bill arrives. 2,836 posts discuss terms or exclusions, and 130 describe learning a rule only at claim time. In the most-liked refusal stories, the reasons are a flooded engine, exclusions for natural hazards, and being told to claim from the other driver.

Every insurer is the same: friendly when you pay them, different when you claim.

A car owner, 2016-07-21. Paraphrased from Vietnamese.

Only at the repair did I learn that on a 1.5 million dong scratch, I pay the 1 million deductible.

Read it as about one post in seven, every period. The forums shrank: 8,487 insurance posts by car owners in 2012, 619 in 2025, so the last bar rests on far fewer posts. Shares come from a topic tag an AI model gave each post; we did not check this one tag by hand.

Who car owners ask

Ask the repair shop, not the call centre

Many car owners pick an insurer by starting at the repair shop and working backwards.

738 posts describe picking the insurer the repair shop works with, and 413 credit the shop with handling the paperwork.

The car dealer matters more each decade. Insurance sold with a new car grew from 4.2 percent of car owners' insurance talk in 2003-2012 to 11.6 percent in 2022-2026.

Every repair shop has an insurer it knows. Buy that one and the claim goes more smoothly.

1 / 7

Claims

How common is the worry that the insurer will not pay?

11,515 out of 76,236 insurance posts by car owners; about 15% in every period, 2003-2026

Posts written while making a claim run 6.6 negative to 1 positive. Easy to buy, hard to claim.

  1. 2024-08-28: buying is easy, claiming is hard
  2. 2021-03-13: insurer and brand both refused after water entry
  3. 2020-06-08: every insurer behaves the same at claim time

Mandatory insurance

Do car owners know what mandatory third-party insurance pays?

Confusion rose from 1.9% (2003-2012) to 4.0% (2022-2026) of insurance posts by car owners

More car owners are unsure who pays. The ones who find out it pays become its loudest fans.

  1. 2024-04-03: the at-fault driver's mandatory insurance pays for your car
  2. 2023-08-13: does mandatory insurance pay for the car I hit, and damage insurance for mine?
  3. 2018-12-21: a primer, because others keep mixing it up

Trust

When price and trust meet in one post, which wins?

94 posts put trust first; 22 put price first, out of 116 posts that weigh the two

Trust, about 4 to 1. Most “they are all the same” posts mean all are bad at paying.

  1. 2024-08-29: reputable names cost more but pay faster
  2. 2024-08-10: always the same insurer: pricier, but clear
  3. 2016-07-21: friendly when you pay, different when you claim

Who they listen to

Who do car owners mention when they talk about insurance?

Repair shop 5,826; car dealer 2,638; apps 275; sales calls 50, out of 76,236 insurance posts by car owners

The people around the car come up far more often than apps or websites.

  1. 2010-05-31: bought from day one “because I know them”
  2. 2012-11-02: can I get the club's insurance deal without the party?

Trust

Why do car owners switch insurer?

16 of 741 posts about switching insurer mention a lower price

Car owners leave after a missed callback or a bad claim. Price rarely comes into it.

  1. 2020-02-03: promised a renewal call that never came
  2. 2010-03-25: called the hotline twice; nobody called back
  3. 2009-09-30: picked a newcomer, because newcomers serve well

Trust

What makes “a good insurer” in car owners' words?

5,385 posts in advice threads; price ranks 6th among the qualities they name

Clear terms, fast payment, helpful staff and a good repair shop come first.

  1. 2017-03-21: listed his insurer's faults; will try another
  2. 2015-07-17: the risk is bad advice and no help in a dispute

Small print

When do car owners learn the small print?

130 of 2,836 posts on terms or exclusions learned a rule only at claim time

Deductibles and exclusions surprise car owners after the loss, not before the sale.

  1. 2016-03-23: some terms sit in tiny print at the bottom
  2. 2014-12-29: the deductible ate two-thirds of a scratch repair
  3. 2015-10-31: state exclusions openly, not at claim time

One answer, start to finish

What a reply looks like

This is how row four of the table above was made. The belief went in as plain words. The assistant counted posts complaining about paperwork when making a claim and when buying the policy, read a sample and linked each one.

An assistant window: the question about purchase paperwork, the count 764 versus 248, three dated posts and the conclusion that the pain sits at the claim.
Re-drawn from a real answerQuestion 8 of 50, run on 2026-10-15 over the insurance posts written by car owners. The layout is ours; the counts and posts are the assistant's.

The question, as typed

“Using the atlas, test this belief: issuing car insurance paperwork is heavy. Compare complaints at purchase and at the claim.”

Five posts it quoted

  1. 2009-10-09Buying is easy; getting paid after a loss is exhausting.
  2. 2011-08-06A pricier insurer is worth it, because cheap ones bring tangled claims.
  3. 2010-04-05A car owner uses the insurer's purchase photos to contest a refused claim.
  4. 2024-08-28Buying is easy and claiming is hard; only the informed get paid.
  5. 2014-04-12First accident, no guidance on the file, and the claim failed.

In practice

How you use it

  1. Type a belief about your customersIn plain words, for example “buying the policy means heavy paperwork”.
  2. Your AI assistant counts the matching posts and links themFor that belief: 764 posts complain about paperwork when making a claim, 248 when buying the policy.
  3. Read the posts and decideOpen a few, check the count means what it seems to, then keep, change or drop the idea.

How this was made

How we counted

We started from 14.5 million public posts on three Vietnamese car forums, September 2003 to October 2026. 13.5 million of them are analysed, which here means placed on a topic map, and each one links back to its page.

We kept car owners only, removing insurance agents, repair shops and car dealers advertising, news reposts and copies. That left 76,236 insurance posts written by car owners (sellers and ads removed).

Counts come from keyword searches and from topic tags an AI model gave each post. On a hand check the tags were right about 8 times in 10. A count is posts, not people, and a post shows what someone wrote, not whether it is true. Quotes are English paraphrases.

We host it. It only reads, answers about 30 questions a minute, and you send us no customer data. Data, consent and how to connect →
